Joel Radio #230: All New Stuff
Oct 19th
Comedian Ted Moss returns to sit in with Joel and tells him everything he knows about comedy. Unfortunately, much of what what Ted has to say is wrong, at least according to Joel. When should comedians introduce new material to their act? How should you approach an open mike at a club versus one at a bar? It’s a spirited debate where there are no right or wrong answers, with the only possible conclusion being that both guys are sure the other is wrong. Also, Jon Lovitz and TJ Miller perform at the Comedy Castle and Joel has reports on both shows. Turns out, people enjoy seeing celebrities. Who knew? Plus, Ted’s internet dating history is a comedy of errors (hear Joel’s way more limited experiences too), early Oscar contenders A Star is Born and First Man get reviewed, and you’ll find what happened to Corey on this show but it’s not much of a surprise if you’ve been paying attention for the last thirteen years.

Joel Radio #224: The Mexican Bookstore
Jul 24th
Comedian Bill Hildebrandt has been a frequent guest over the years on this show, and he returns to plug his upcoming shows at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle this weekend. Bill thinks it’s his last headlining appearance at the club, but he’s thought that before. Joel asks him about his start in comedy, his past life as a recording engineer, the future of stand-up comedy, and the rise of political correctness in comedy. Plus you’ll hear the history of the mellotron, a funny Trump joke, what it’s like to play in a band and much more. This is a good, insightful, entertaining interview with a guy who Joel considers his mentor in comedy, so give it a listen.

Joel Radio #170: Because We Care
Apr 20th
It’s an unusual show, but it’s unusual to have so many great comedians under one roof. Joel and Corey Hall performed at a benefit show for The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan and captured the behind the scenes stories and goofing off that goes on at these types of shows. You’ll hear how Mike Green got tasered on stage, find out the true identity of the infamous Home Depot show headliner, place a bet on what tome the show will end, and Joel recaps his local TV appearance promoting the show (was it better than Corey’s recent appearance on the same show?) Also, you’ll hear some jokes on stage from the always funny Bill Bushart, some from Sal Demilio and Joel’s complete set, too. Plus, meet Joel’s comedy students, Bryan McCree tells you why not all black comics are black comics, and tons more revelry and silliness from the backstage to the showroom to the bar. This is a fun listen. Special thanks to Bob Phillips for organizing the show and the stars of the Detroit comedy community – too numerous to list here – for being on this show and making it a great night.

Corey and Joel Radio Show #216: Breaking The Sound Wave
Apr 8th
If you listened to the live show from the Comedy Castle two weeks ago, you heard an an unplanned invasion by two girls named Jodi and Jamie. Well now they’ve invaded the actual Corey and Joel studio, and the show may never be the same. Amongst their yelling, screaming, and singing, the guys try to get to get the girls’ back story, their plans for future Hollywood stardom, and their measurements. Turns out Jamie is less than five foot tall, is in psychotherapy and is totally afraid to fly. Jodi has a gold tooth, wears men’s athletic socks and and is a cup size “L”. Whatever that means. Listen as the girls swig champagne, sing their sexy student-teacher song/skit, and plug the heck out of their YouTube videos. It’s 99 minutes of noise, chaos and confusion. Try to have as much fun as those two, but that just might be impossible.
