Joel Radio #222: The Green Room Story
Jun 26th
This podcast is known for going off on tangents and taking forever to get to the point, but when comedian Tom McCarthy sat in with Joel and Corey for this week’s show, he had no idea what he was in for. Tom has been a staple of the Detroit comedy scene for fifteen years or so and arrives to promote a TV pilot he’s shooting soon. It involves a lot of local comics and Joel gives his not-so-serious impressions of the talent involved (including many of his former students) — and Corey Hall. Eventually, the guys shut up long enough to let Tom tell the “green room” story which begins a tangent about how open mike shows should run, the skills needed to emcee and Joel thinks most show producers get it wrong. Tom’s a good guy, a funny comic and a great guest on this show. Also, another pro wrestling superstar dies and at least Joel had the honor of sharing the dressing room and being nearly injured by the legendary brute. Plus, reviews of Incredibles 2, Tag, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Want to find a better actor than Hannibal Buress? Simply Google any human being who has ever lived or just look in the mirror.

Tom McCarthy is really good at comedy and Joel is quite middling at Photoshop
Joel Radio #221: KFC Diplomacy
Jun 13th
The world seems crazier than ever, as Trump meets a Korean dictator, IHOp changes its name, Anthony Bourdain dies, and the NBA is the most important thing in the world – to some people. Stuff got weird this week. Really weird. Also, Corey Hall meets a big celebrity in Detroit, but it wasn’t a great encounter – find out who he met and why he wasn’t a nice man on this show. Plus, Star Wars nerds are mean, Roseanne goes nuts, as does Lisa Lampanelli, HBO’s Barry was fantastic, and movie reviews of Deadpool 2, A Quiet Place and Herdeitary. The big takeaway from this show – Guy Fieri is an asshat who will outlive us all.

Joel Radio #199: The Oklahoma Eight
Aug 8th
On this episode, Joel recaps another Gathering of the Juggalos, including him finally getting some good press for a change. The big takeaway is probably the crime, or lack thereof, at the 2017 festival site in Oklahoma City. Joel details the eight people arrested and what they got pinched for, and compares it to recent arrests at concerts and festivals around the world. It’s an eye-opening look at what is a feared and misunderstood event and why the good people of Oklahoma couldn’t separate the truth from the hype. Joel will also tell you the worst state to drive in, how to make peace with a not-so-kind-in-the-past reporter, and why Colorado is the new Florida. Also, the movie called Detroit came out this past week and it’s not very good. Hear where the filmmakers went wrong and find out why the Detroit riots of 1967 is a story that deserved better. Plus, how to get (or not get) all the podcasts you want – just cough up some dough and download three or four apps, Corey Hall reviews The Big Sick, HBO’s Defiant Ones is worth a look, and the fans chime in on the best and worst movies of summer.

Joel Radio #191: The Joke Assassin
Mar 27th
Drè Murray is is one of the funniest guys you’ll ever see onstage or off. Joel and he met on 910 AM radio in Detroit and have become fast friends. Drè sits down on the podcast to talk his career, how he moved to Detroit from the East coast, his thoughts on the current comedy scene and much more. Drè has opinions on interracial dating, the current Dave Chappelle controversy, and why Shake Shack is overrated. Joel is pressured into doing a Jimmy Walker impression, shares his experience of accidentally pulling off girls’ wigs, and explains why being an angry New Yorker is both a survival instinct and quite therapeutic. Also, the future of Detroit and the downtown vs neighborhoods fight, remembering the great Chuck Berry, and Drè’s explanation of how Hillary Clinton was treated like a black woman. Plus, Joel sees the incredible Circus 1903 and you should, too.

Joel Radio #170: Because We Care
Apr 20th
It’s an unusual show, but it’s unusual to have so many great comedians under one roof. Joel and Corey Hall performed at a benefit show for The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan and captured the behind the scenes stories and goofing off that goes on at these types of shows. You’ll hear how Mike Green got tasered on stage, find out the true identity of the infamous Home Depot show headliner, place a bet on what tome the show will end, and Joel recaps his local TV appearance promoting the show (was it better than Corey’s recent appearance on the same show?) Also, you’ll hear some jokes on stage from the always funny Bill Bushart, some from Sal Demilio and Joel’s complete set, too. Plus, meet Joel’s comedy students, Bryan McCree tells you why not all black comics are black comics, and tons more revelry and silliness from the backstage to the showroom to the bar. This is a fun listen. Special thanks to Bob Phillips for organizing the show and the stars of the Detroit comedy community – too numerous to list here – for being on this show and making it a great night.

Joel Radio #155: The Oddballs
Sep 2nd
It’s been a busy few weeks at Joel Radio, and it’s all re-capped on this fine episode. Your host headed off to New York City to see his old college stomping grounds, get drunk with hipsters, visit museums and hang with some comedy buddies. His main objective though was to see Penn & Teller On Broadway which he did, and while sitting next to a childhood hero, no less. Hear all about the P&T show, the best things to do in New York and why a front-row ticket isn’t always a front-row ticket. Joel also attended the annual Funny or Die: Oddball Comedy Festival starring Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari and others. Find out who were the surprising stars of the show and what unknown comics that Joel knows who might be blowing up in to very big stars in the future. Joel is joined for the show by Detroit’s own comedy oddball, the delightful Samantha Rager. Sam had to break in to her house car to get to the show, but it was worth it as Sam talks about getting bumped at a comedy show by a big star, seeing year-old movies at the dollar show, and the most adorably clueless rundown of a fantasy football team ever. Also, a Gathering of the Juggalos comedy recap, and reviews of the movies Trainwreck, Ant-Man and the ridiculous The Gallows. Plus, RIP “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, as Joel tells a harrowing tale of hosting a show with one of the greatest pro-wrestling characters of all-time.

Joel is fatter than Penn and shorter than Teller!
Beautiful Lower Manhattan from the Circle Line cruise. Joel actually took this picture!
Joel Radio #143: I Love You Collin Moulton
Jan 9th
It’s a different format on this episode, as Joel sat down with comedian Collin Moulton for a casual, Sunday afternoon talk about comedy, life and whole milk. Collin and Joel met a few years ago on the road and developed a fast friendship over clowns, jiu jitsu and comedy. So when Collin made a recent spin through Detroit, the guys got together to watch a Lions game, a UFC show and eat Taco Bell. It’s a fun conversation filled with inside comedy anecdotes, tips on performing and strategies for making a podcast successful – not that Joel takes his own advice! While this talk was recorded a few weeks ago, the upside is that Collin now has his own podcast for your listening pleasure. Don’t worry, Joel helped just enough to get it up and running, but not enough to ruin it. Enjoy!

Joel Radio #140: Better Than The Jets
Nov 25th
Joel and Corey are fired up after watching the Buffalo Bills destroy the New York Jets at Ford Field in Detroit. They have a lot to say about the game, which was collection of guys that aren’t popular in Detroit, including two former coaches who nobody likes now. Hear about the guys’ exploits at the stadium, as football is more fun when the tickets are free and you don’t care at all about the result. Also, a full breakdown of the allegations against Bill Cosby. Why a famous, powerful man resorts to drugging women, and why what he is accused of is absolutely 100% a crime. Plus, Last Comic Standing is canceled (again), goodbye to Mike Nichols and Tom Magliozzi, Corey streams some old showson Hulu, Banksy Does New York on HBO, and Sex Tape is (probably) the worst movie of the year. There’s also a nuclear fight over an indie movie that Joel loved and Corey despised. Listen to hear why Corey is wrong (It’s not fair because I wrote this, but Corey is still wrong – Joel).

Joel Radio #135: More Pretzel Than Pizza
Sep 4th
While not a weird Oreo flavor or a wacky Jones Soda variety, Little Caesar’s introducing a pretzel crust pizza seemed like a good thing to investigate. Turns out this delicious food mash-up is better as idea than a real-world dinner item as neither Joel nor Corey really enjoyed the thing that much. Find out which standard pizza ingredient was left out, what it was replaced for and why kosher salt should be banned from pizzas from this point forward. Spend the time listening to this show rather than the $7 it cost for the pizza because, in the end – they’re both a waste! Also, the guys crack the case of the leaked celebrity nudes. Find out which ones are real, which are fake and why Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton claiming to be victims is laughable. Plus, a review of the Oddball Comedy Festival in Detroit, including a famous comic who, while short of bombing, did not do well. All this, and Joel appears in another movie (this time on Netflix), Houdini gets a miniseries, and Saved By The Bell gets an awful, cringe-worthy TV movie that Corey was forced to watch.
The actual pie that was half-consumed by Corey and Joel. They should have eaten the box.
