Joel Radio #223: No Stingers
Jul 11th
Joel hasn’t always enjoyed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he still goes to the movies and the most recent one, Ant-Man and The Wasp, was OK. But making people wait for the post-credit sequences has become a frustrating, ridiculous ritual that should probably end. Joel and Corey Hall review the new film, discuss the “stinger” phenomenon and why the last scene in Ant-Man was an absolute waste of time for everyone. And yes, you’ll have to wait for the end of the show for this discussion – it’s better than an ant playing drums! Also, comedian Bill Bushart calls in to promote his TV project, shares tales of travelling to Amsterdam, and promotes his comedy classes. Plus, GLOW returns to Netflix and it’s a bore, Joel tells you of a fantastic “real” wrestling show that you should watch, pinball in the digital age frustrates Corey, and the comedy special that everyone’s talking about except Joel who won’t watch comedy specials. The guys also have reviews of The Staircase, Wild Wild Country and Derren Brown’s Miracles for your Netflix binging needs.

This is the “stinger” from Ant-Man and The Wasp. It’s stupid, lame, not funny, and not worth waiting for. It’s in the trailer, too, so it’s not a spoiler! FU Marvel!
Joel Radio #170: Because We Care
Apr 20th
It’s an unusual show, but it’s unusual to have so many great comedians under one roof. Joel and Corey Hall performed at a benefit show for The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan and captured the behind the scenes stories and goofing off that goes on at these types of shows. You’ll hear how Mike Green got tasered on stage, find out the true identity of the infamous Home Depot show headliner, place a bet on what tome the show will end, and Joel recaps his local TV appearance promoting the show (was it better than Corey’s recent appearance on the same show?) Also, you’ll hear some jokes on stage from the always funny Bill Bushart, some from Sal Demilio and Joel’s complete set, too. Plus, meet Joel’s comedy students, Bryan McCree tells you why not all black comics are black comics, and tons more revelry and silliness from the backstage to the showroom to the bar. This is a fun listen. Special thanks to Bob Phillips for organizing the show and the stars of the Detroit comedy community – too numerous to list here – for being on this show and making it a great night.

The flyer for the benefit show. Pretty sure everyone on this makes an appearance on the podcast
Joel Radio #159: I Love Carlos Mencia
Oct 30th
Comics accused of stealing is a big deal in the world of comedy, and this week Joel and his guest comedian Bill Bushart attempt to get to the bottom of the most recent controversy of Amy Schumer being accused of lifting material from the late Patrice O’Neal. Did Amy steal material that seems to been available in the public domain for years? Can you even steal a street joke? The guys look at this issue and Joel’s theory that comedy nerds and their accusations of theft are ruining comedy. Speaking of stealing, Joel spent a week watching the infamous “joke thief” Carlos Mencia working a comedy club, and had some surprising takeaways. Find out why Joel thinks Carlos was an excellent performer, a shrewd businessman, and why Joe Rogan’s smear videos on Carlos from a few years ago make Joe look like an asshole. Plus, how comedian and 9/11 liar Steve Rannazzisi fits into all this and why his involvement shows that Mencia really has gotten a raw deal. If that wasn’t enough, the guys talk the importance of comedy classes, why it’s great to work gigs in Florida, why opening for big acts kinda sucks, and the night Joel fired Jamie Kennedy. Also, The Walk and The Martian get reviewed and 3D formats get put to the test, Adam Ruins Everything is a show you should watch, and why your comedy “showcase” isn’t helping anybody and a real-world example of why that is.

Joel Radio #101: On Top of the Pickle Barrel
Feb 6th
It’s been a very long time since comedian Bill Bushart joined the show, but it was worth the wait as he joins Joel and Corey for a 100+ minutes of yuks. Topic #1 is a discussion of the current state of stand-up comedy, how it’s changed over the years, and the guys’ advice for new comics. Joel tells you how to bomb with grace (or Grace), Bill talks the art of teaching comedy, and Corey regrets never cashing in on an open mike windfall. Also, the guys also attempt to tell road sex stories, only to figure out all the good stories happened to someone else. But, however, you’ll find out who’s done what (and where) in their private lives, like who was in the nun’s bed, who got their parent’s approval for a girlfriend sleep over, and what awful things were going on at the bagel shop. Plus, why you should always take a girl to the strip club, a Facebook stalker gone public, and why Joel can’t wait for Bill to throw another party.

Corey and Joel Radio Show #157: Live from the Fest
Jan 21st
Corey and Joel are live from the 1st annual Detroit International Comedy Festival at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle on this special show. The guys sit down with all the stars of the show, like headliner Mike Green. Mike details his 22-year rise to stardom and the four wives it took to get him there. He describes being the subject of a new documentary, the genesis of his material and how he tries not to sound like Dane Cook. Then you’ll meet relative newcomer Dave Landau, who’s made appearances on Comedy Central and Last Comic Standing. Even with his success, Dave still has to take 3AM flight to his Carribean honeymoon. What’s the itenerary Detroit to Nassau via Stockholm? Dave’s a good sport and a good comic. We also catch up with performers and old friends Keith Ruff, Bill Hildebrandt and Bill Bushart. Find who got banned from a club and why, who hated their Festival set and who won’t allow Joel back at his house for a party. Also, club owner and comedy legend Mark Ridley stops by, a check bounces (not Mark’s!) and the best Jay Leno and Kevin Eubanks impressions – ever.

Then learn about Bill’s upcoming gigs and find out why moving up the comedy ladder pays little or no money. Ponder the pure suck of Last Comic Standing and find out how to help one of our own advance. Also answered are other comedy questions like does being a badass mean Joe Rogan’s not funny anymore? How awful will the Rosie O’Donnell View be? How bad was the Facts of Life? Also, America’s World Cup failure, Bill’s Death Pool failure, Joel’s “big announcement”, movie studios snub Corey, gay showtunes and the juggalo lifestyle.

Then it’s on to David Blaine stuck in a fishbowl. Is this really a magic or just attention getting bulls#$t? Not to be outdone Joel demonstrates his amazing skill with a Rubik’s Cube. Corey and Joel Radio Show #62: Anniversary Extravaganza Part 2
Mar 29th
It’s part 2 of the anniversary show and there’s more mayhem. J. Chris Newberg plugs in and rocks out his musical comedy. We do more shots and the whole thing begins to unravel. The capper is a ferocious, hilarious roasting by PJ. Corey and Joel take it right between the eyes as the big guy spills his hatred all over the stage. PJ saves his best for German superfan, Nils; who traveled all the way across the Atlantic to hear Nazi jokes. Also, Sal Demilio entertains, we meet Bart – the owner of Club Bart, Bill Bushart sits down and girls take their tops off, or do they? It’s a booty-shaking finale to the best night ever.
