Joel Radio #267: The Return of Comedy
Oct 16th
It looks like stand-up comedy is returning, even in a smaller, socially-distanced way, and Joel talks to the formerly retired comedian Ted Moss about what’s about to happen. Joel tells you about The Comedy Castle’s new procedures for the November re-opening and is proud to announce the return of the Advanced Comedy Class! Ted has already done some shows and has more coming up, when he’s not making episodes of his ever-growing podcast. Also, find out the beef between David Crosby and the recently deceased Eddie Van Halen, if a millennial can enjoy Airplane!, and the simple, according to Joel, mathematics of the stand-up comedy business. Plus tons of TV reviews including Ted Lasso, The Goes Wrong Show, A Wilderness of Error, and the most important movie of the year the coronavirus documentary Totally Under Control.
Mark Ridley and Louie Anderson at The Comedy Castle – the good times return November 5th!
Joel Radio #187: Radio Ed
Jan 17th
Joel welcomes “young” comedian, radio DJ and good guy Ed Hunter to the podcast. Ed and Joel have known each other for a while, but Ed’s role in a major American historical event – the funeral of President John F. Kennedy is fascinating. Ed shares his story of being a precocious child and writing to the Army bugler that flubbed the playing of “Taps” at Arlington National Cemetery. That letter would become a memento of that sad occasion that would find Ed his fifteen minutes of fame some fifty years later. It’s an amazing, uplifting story that is in stark contrast to the divisiveness in Washington today. Speaking of Washington, Judd Apatow has some wise and funny observations about Trump, the internet and the election that Joel found enlightening. Also, feedback to the last few podcasts, Joel says Jackie is a good watch for JFK history fans, and the terrifying Oscar-worthy PBS documentary Command and Control can be seen right now. Plus, La La Land and Lion are really good, the Carrie Fisher/Debbie Reynolds documentary is weird, and the new OJ documentary is OK, but last years OJ stuff was so, so much better.

Joel Radio #170: Because We Care
Apr 20th
It’s an unusual show, but it’s unusual to have so many great comedians under one roof. Joel and Corey Hall performed at a benefit show for The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan and captured the behind the scenes stories and goofing off that goes on at these types of shows. You’ll hear how Mike Green got tasered on stage, find out the true identity of the infamous Home Depot show headliner, place a bet on what tome the show will end, and Joel recaps his local TV appearance promoting the show (was it better than Corey’s recent appearance on the same show?) Also, you’ll hear some jokes on stage from the always funny Bill Bushart, some from Sal Demilio and Joel’s complete set, too. Plus, meet Joel’s comedy students, Bryan McCree tells you why not all black comics are black comics, and tons more revelry and silliness from the backstage to the showroom to the bar. This is a fun listen. Special thanks to Bob Phillips for organizing the show and the stars of the Detroit comedy community – too numerous to list here – for being on this show and making it a great night.

Joel Radio #124: Know What I’m Sayin?
Mar 7th
It’s back to the studio, as Joel Radio welcomes the return of John Tenney to the podcast. Last week’s live event is on the forefront of Joel’s mind however, as he recaps the challenges of recording a live show, the new equipment he used and the pressure of writing an all-new comedy set. Joel and John listen back to Joel’s set critiquing the material in an attempt to figure out why some stronger jokes died and some weaker ones succeeded, and why local references, topical jokes and arcane references should be avoided. The guys also review the amazing, incomprehensible performance of Nino Brown, who strolled on to the comedy stage with a full month’s notice and managed to yell, curse and make other indescribable noises to the delight of Tenney, who is planning a potential CD release of Nino’s material. Even a tardy Corey Hall can’t deny how funny the set is on playback, despite the fact that he got up and left the room as it was happening live. The bad comedy doesn’t stop there, however, as Seth Myers makes his late night debut, and even if it’s better than Jimmy Fallon’s debut, there’s still a long way to go. Plus, a full Oscar recap including Travolta’s hair and intro mishap, why 12 Years a Slave won all the awards, and the sheer awfulness that was Ellen Degeneres. Hey Ellen, a woman wearing a tuxedo should not tell another woman she looks like a dude. Read more Oscar and late night snarking on the official Joel Radio Twitter @joelradioshow.

Joel Radio #85: Stuffing the Ballot Box
May 31st
Back on episode #69 the guys tried to decide which of the new fall TV shows would be hits. A point system was assigned and predictions were made. Now the results are in, and comedian Matt McClowry rejoins Corey and Joel for the big reveal. Who is the big winner? Which shows were the surprise hits? Which were the unsurprising flops? Listen and find out! Also, Matt details his latest comedy travels, including some prestigious festivals, and an upcoming headline date. He also tells you his favorite new city for comedy, but don’t go to the bar across the street – unless you’re into that kind of thing. Plus, a local comedy poll drives Corey nuts, Joel doesn’t know how many shows he’s done, Martin from Bay City likes crappy music, and a Men in Black 3 review that’s every bit as lackluster as the actual film.
