Joel Radio #276: Goodbye Bill Hildebrandt
Jun 10th
It is with a very heavy heart that Joel says goodbye to his mentor, friend and “Comedy Dad”, Bill Hildebrandt who passed recently. Joel tries to avoid crying (and fails!) by inviting some of Bill’s good friends, comedians Derek Richards and Kevin Kramis on the show. Joel and Derek talk Bill’s time playing in Vegas, the history of “The Mug” and its accompanying bit, and why Bill was the curmudgeon comedian we all loved. Kevin joins to talk about Bill as a comedy teacher, working with Soupy Sales, why Bill made the “hands bit” work (in an emergency!), and Joel reminisces about doing comedy in a Home Depot, and tells how Bill was almost Upchuck the Clown. It’s a bittersweet show, but hopefully a loving tribute to great friend and great comedian. Details of the official memorial for Bill can be found on Facebook by clicking here.

Joel Radio #259: Best After Dinner
Mar 10th
Comedian and all-around curmudgeon Bill Hildebrandt returns to chat about how the corporate comedy show is done wrong, the effect of coronavirus on the business and why comedy agents are weasels. It’s an inside comedy talk for sure, but it’s hard to disagree with him – unless you’re an agent or a corporation looking for fun-but-misguided way to entertain your employees. Also, Joel takes Rob Schneider out for breakfast, Atlanta traffic sucks, what happens when a big store closes, and movie production issues that drive Bill nuts. Plus, a TV and movie rundown with The Invisible Man, The Impractical Jokers Movie, The Outsider on HBO, Hunters on Amazon Prime, Breeders on FX and more.
The corporate meeting – comedy’s best paying enemy of fun
Joel Radio #251: Shorter Than a Marathon
Oct 25th
Joel is joined by Bill Hildebrandt, and returning fellow comic, Kevin Kramis on this week’s show. Kevin is fresh off running a marathon, a half-marathon anyway, and he tells us all about running and how the recent marathon record isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Also, a discussion about hair plugs, rugs and how newer techniques to restore hair must really suck -and they don’t fool anybody. Plus, why some tribute bands are better than others, Zombieland: Double Tap is a good follow-up, the Pavarotti documentary is recommended, Watchmen on HBO reviewed, and Joel gets completely ridiculed for saying the Biggest Little Farm is one of the year’s best films.
We’re only running in Marathons with a Subway
Joel Radio #247: Goodnight, Funnyman
Aug 20th
Veteran comedian Bill Hildebrandt joins Joel as a comedy legend as passed – Kip Addotta has died at age 75. OK, who the fuck is Kip Addotta? That’s an understandable question, but among other things, he was Bill’s connection to playing in Las Vegas, he recorded a bunch of popular comedy songs, released albums and was a frequent talk show guest in the 1970s. Bill shares his memories of Kip, his act, and why Vegas isn’t the same as it used to be. Also, Joel reviews Impractical Jokers live, and Gilbert Gottfried gets his gift at the Gathering of the Juggalos. Plus, comedy at a movie theater? Find out where it’s happening, and it’s probably a good thing as the movies suck right now. Find out who didn’t make it to the end of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood! He missed a good ending, anyway.
We’d eulogize Kip Addotta, if he’d only lettuce. RIP Kip
Joel Radio #239: Direct From The Chuckle Dungeon
Mar 28th
Joel explains why there was no podcasts for the last month. Turns out the surgery he forgot to disclose was way harder for him to recover from than he thought. Hear Joel’s tale of woe, the complications he’s suffered, how the anesthesia nurse was comedy club stage jumper, and all the embarrassing details on this show. Joel is joined by comedians Corey Hall and Bill Hildebrandt this week and hot topic of non-comedians being booked at comedy clubs is discussed. Is it smart business or an insult to our “art”? Should an unknown, but really funny comedian get bookings over a humorless celeb like Dustin Diamond or Ron Jeremy? The guys discuss the unfunny celebrities they’ve worked with and why it’s not always the worst decision to use them. Plus, Corey likes Dumbo more than Us, Captain Marvel isn’t that marvelous, Joel thinks Ricky Gervias is great again on After Life, and America’s new past-time – watching Finding Neverland and arguing with those who have never see it.
Joel proudly accepts his gag award for surviving surgery and thanks the Joel Radio listeners
Joel Radio #235: Late Bingo
Jan 4th
The first podcast of 2019 starts like the others – Corey Hall is late! Special guest comedian Bill Hildebrandt and Joel speculate as to why, creating the “Corey Hall is Late Bingo” game. Corey shows up after a few minutes, though. His reason? Listen to find out. And it’s a fun show, too, as the guys talk comedy on New Year’s Eve, why it’s not always a great show, how Tiffany Haddish and Louis CK had infamous NYE shows this year. There are wild, diverse opinions on the topic and Joel reads some online reaction, too, from friends an celebrities alike. Also, celebrities are dying already in 2019 including, legendary pro wrestling interviewer “Mean” Gene Okerlund, and comedy legend Bob Einstein. Plus, another take on the “Gallagher story”, Bird Box made the world go crazy even though it sucks, Joel says there are awesome documentaries on Hulu, and who thought Vice might be the best movie of 2018.
Poor excuses not pictured!
Joel Radio #224: The Mexican Bookstore
Jul 24th
Comedian Bill Hildebrandt has been a frequent guest over the years on this show, and he returns to plug his upcoming shows at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle this weekend. Bill thinks it’s his last headlining appearance at the club, but he’s thought that before. Joel asks him about his start in comedy, his past life as a recording engineer, the future of stand-up comedy, and the rise of political correctness in comedy. Plus you’ll hear the history of the mellotron, a funny Trump joke, what it’s like to play in a band and much more. This is a good, insightful, entertaining interview with a guy who Joel considers his mentor in comedy, so give it a listen.

Joel Radio #137: Live From The Lumber Aisle
Oct 2nd
Comedians are always looking for the next big score, and when they can’t get it from comedy they do something else. Like old friend Bill Hildebrandt, who’s a partner in a new invention by comedians that’s hoping to make the bedroom more fun. It’s nothing dirty, actually, but the Aussome TV Mount is an idea that might actually work. Bill discusses that challenges of being an inventor, the hopes he has for the device and pitches to Joel Radio’s own Shark Tank – Joel and Corey Hall – but will he get any bites? Also, The guys reminisce about hell gigs, including the most infamous one ever; photos of which were recently uncovered over 10 years later. Plus, Joel gets teased for painting a cow, the history of the “hands” bit, reviews of Gone Girl, The Equalizer, Selfie, Red Oaks and a new can’t-miss documentary on Netflix – Print The Legend.

Joel Radio #125: We Lost The Ford Plant
Mar 20th
Taste in music is subjective – except on this episode of Joel Radio, where Joel and his buddies do a March Madness-style playoff bracket to decide who really is the best act in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The panel consists of Joel, Corey Hall, and a returning Bill Hildebrandt, a comic who also worked as a recording engineer in the 60s and 70s. Joel worked hard creating the brackets, seeding all the acts and whittling them down from a list of almost 200 acts to just sixty-four for the tournament. The guys then fill out their individual brackets before making a final, group decision listening to each act’s best song and deciding the merits of each. Corey hates metal and blue collar rock. Bill has never hear of “that guy” Public Enemy. Joel has never smoked enough pot to enjoy Pink Floyd. The debates fly fast as Joel considers Dylan a genius but the Stones merely great. Bill can’t believe The Animals are better than The Eagles, and wonders why Journey aren’t in the Hall. Corey has never roofed a house, so he can’t enjoy Van Halen. No one understands the appeal of Fleetwood Mac, but they know there’s fans out there. It’s a great, funny debate, sprinkled with trivia, like how the organ got so prominent on “Like a Rolling Stone” and why Little Richard might actually be more dangerous than Guns N’ Roses. It all comes down to a Final Four that is probably to be expected but at the same time leaves no one happy. Download a a copy of the brackets for yourself and play along! Also, the guys say goodbye to comedy legend David Brenner and wonder why he was even considered a legend to begin with. Plus, movie reviews of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Tim’s Vermeer, both recommended and playing at an art-house cinema near you.
