Joel Radio #175: Call Anybody Else – A Ghostbusters Review
Jul 15th
While many maligned the making of a new Ghostbusters movie with an all-female cast, Joel Radio was optimistic. The optimism ended today, but not with a roar, instead in a dead silent movie theater on the opening night of the film. Joel is joined in this review by real-life ghostbuster, John Tenney, who was intrigued by the “real-world” paranormal elements in the film more than 80s nostalgia. The guys break down why this film doesn’t work, why too many elements of the 1984 classic weigh it down, and the changes that could’ve made to make this a much better film. They also discuss the “ghost film” as a comedy trope that’s been done for years and how the Bill Murray/Harold Ramis team was really the 1980s version of Abbot and Costello. There’s some minor spoilers, too, including the insufferable cameos, the post-credits stinger, and the description of the ending’s ultimate monster. But trust us when we say that it won’t ruin the movie – it might just save you from seeing it. Plus, a look at the other summer movies from 1984 including the movie that opened the same day and is actually better than the original Ghostbusters.

Joel Radio #145: Movie Mania 2015
Jan 29th
It’s time for the annual review of the best and worst movies of last year. Joel saw all the Oscar-nominated films (except the ones that nobody can see), and did his very best to put together his list. Corey also saw a ton of movies, but his more cavalier approach led to a major oversight in his best-of list, even though the guys surprisingly agreed on what was the year’s very best film. Hear what the best dramas, comedies, animated films and documentaries were, find out the one movie all year that made Joel cry, and why so many movies on the lists were not even released traditionally in theaters. There’s also the worst movies, which include a few Oscar-nom acting performances, the much talked about The Interview, and the perennial appearance of an Adam Sandler movie. If you are looking for some good movies to watch, then this is the show for you. Brought to you by two guys who felt Interstellar was too long, and yet talked for three hours about The Babadook. Enjoy!

Joel Radio #127: Truth in Advertising
May 15th
Weird candies and nasty-flavored chips can mean only one thing – the return of Corey Hall to Joel Radio! Joel has stocked the studio with “test”-flavored Doritos and “Sour Watermelon” Peeps “Minis”. While one host summarily rejects both would-be snacks, the other finds the Peeps quite charming even if they look like dead chick-lings or undersized male (or female) genitalia rather than the robust marshmallow chickens from which they spawned. Hear the full breakdown of the snacks and Joel’s theory about why snack food makers do weird flavors – it’s probably not what you think. There’s also much debate about the changes in late-night TV, as Corey is welcoming Steven Colbert with open arms, while Joel thinks they should have thought outside the box a little more. Ultimately Joel’s suggestion is the worst idea Corey’s ever heard for a late night host, at least since Jimmy Fallon and you’ll never guess who Joel suggests. Plus, Corey reviews Godzilla and Amazing Spider-Man 2, Joel has a must-see music documentary on Netflix, the guys call for an end to movie sequels, and John Turturro lives out every man’s fantasy and makes one of the worst movies ever in the process.

That’s either a worm, a snake, a flaccid penis, a sugary green clitoris, or a baby chicken, but whatever it is, it’s delicious
Joel Radio #106: Close The Mike
May 1st
On this show you’ll hear the comedy debut of show friend Rob Rose. While Joel believes no one’s first attempt at stand-up comedy is indicative of any future success or failure, it is safe to say that Rob’s debut is highly entertaining for all the wrong reasons. Listen as you’ll hear the several-month-old recording of Rob drunkenly stumbling through a set that includes a potentially offensive (yet hilarious) opening line, references to comedy “greats” from the past (Judy Tenuta!) and crowd work so inept it might be described as the comedian heckling the audience. Still, when you consider the nearly empty room, the inebriation of the performer, the lack of preparation and the assholery of Joel and Corey in the audience, it all adds up to an extremely entertaining good time. Besides, Rob is a good sport and he gets more serious comedy advice from Joel and Corey in the studio including lessons learned from the greats (like Dave Attell), like how to make your comedy sound natural, how to deal with success and failure and how to not look like an open miker on Facebook. It’s good solid comedy advice, after some well-deserved ball-busting on this show. Also, Corey reviews Iron Man 3 which leads into a summer movie preview including end of the world movies that look alike, a return for Superman, and why everyone claims to love The Lone Ranger, even though almost nobody seen it. Plus, reaction to the Boston bombing, podcasts the guys like, and why, after several months, it must be said that the Doritos tacos have failed – sorry Taco Bell.

Joel Radio #102: Night Terrors
Feb 28th
This week’s episode features some scary stories and a mystery – where’s Corey? – so it’s best that John Tenney sits in to help out any way he can. And Joel’s having troubles, too. Sleeping troubles anyway, as he recounts how his natural sleep aid made him act violently, why he preferred being on prescription meds for insomnia and why he’s not a fan of illicit drugs in this case. John shares his own battles with sleep disorders and how his girlfriends have used his semi-conscious state it to their advantage. Find out why Joel refuses to do a sleep study and get John’s recommendations for some good zzzzs, and not all of them seem like good ideas. Also, Joel reviews the History of The Eagles documentary and Dave Grohl’s new movie Sound City. Joel is a sucker for rock docs, and thinks even if the band sucks, the story can still be good. Plus, John watches the Oscars but not the nominated movies, show friend Harry goes crazy for chicken, and why no podcasters can get their shit together – except Joel.

Joel Radio #93: We Can Kirk It Out
Oct 12th
This week’s guest has taken time out from Detroit’s open mike scene, rambling about the Detroit Tigers on Facebook, and making little-seen YouTube videos to join Joel and Corey on the show. Kirk is an original thinker with big plans in show business, and if he can survive 90 minutes here, he’ll probably do just fine in Hollywood. The guys discuss podcasting’s history and Joel and Corey’s place in it, why Corey is sick of horror movies and Kirk’s plans to move to L.A.. Also, the Hulk Hogan sex tape is driving Hulkamaniacs Corey and Kirk wild, but Joel, the show’s pro-wrestling insider, thinks the whole thing is a cheap stunt and offers up evidence why. Plus, Kevin James’s new movie makes no-one smile except Henry Winkler – who got paid for it.
