After the fight on show #171, Corey Hall returns to discuss a radically changing media landscape including the world’s greatest comedian – Chewbacca mask wearing mom, Candace Payne. That she joined late night host James Corden for a bit, really irked Corey though, as the chubby comic was the first media member to get his hands on the oh-so-hot viral video star. The guys discuss the ways the media will exploit Candace – from Ellen DeGeneres writing her a check, to a future Disney parade, hear the predictions of the wacky ways the vampires in Hollywood will use Candace’s stupid-but-admittedly-funny video for their own gains. Also, lots of changes on both local Detroit and national daytime TV, hear about all the moves and how Joel and Corey can become TV superstars. Plus, Joel predicts Morley Safer’s death, Jonah Hill has a hot sister, Midnight Special movie review, and the surprising results of F, Marry, Kill with Oprah, Ellen and Whoopi.

Joel Radio #171: Eat This

After a well-received live show, Joel returns to the studio with Corey Hall to recap his eventful vacation to Florida and New York City. The highlights include riding wacky tourist bikes on Marco Island, and a very funny appearance by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at Bruce Springsteen’s tour finale in Brooklyn. Joel also ate at some legendary New York establishments, although Corey is not impressed with Joel’s selection. The guys also say goodbye to Prince, and Joel put together a selection his career highlights as well as some popular songs that he wrote that were covered by others. It’s a far-reaching list of some of the best tunes of the era and you’ll also hear Prince’s Minnesota Vikings theme song that we’re not sure was ever used. Also, television controversy as Kelly Ripa feuds with Michael Strahan, Stephen Colbert gets rebooted, and Steve Harvey gets another TV show and Corey can’t take it anymore. Plus, Flea butchers the national anthem, the prophetic Prince blind item that predicted his death, and Shake Shack vs In-N-Out Burger from one person’s opinion that’s had both.

Joel Radio #170: Because We Care

It’s an unusual show, but it’s unusual to have so many great comedians under one roof. Joel and Corey Hall performed at a benefit show for The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, Michigan and captured the behind the scenes stories and goofing off that goes on at these types of shows. You’ll hear how Mike Green got tasered on stage, find out the true identity of the infamous Home Depot show headliner, place a bet on what tome the show will end, and Joel recaps his local TV appearance promoting the show (was it better than Corey’s recent appearance on the same show?) Also, you’ll hear some jokes on stage from the always funny Bill Bushart, some from Sal Demilio and Joel’s complete set, too. Plus, meet Joel’s comedy students, Bryan McCree tells you why not all black comics are black comics, and tons more revelry and silliness from the backstage to the showroom to the bar. This is a fun listen. Joel Radio #169: Cannonball Fun

With last week’s announcement of a Cannonball Run reboot, Joel has made it his goal to re-cast the reboot, making a giant list of potential new-millennium stars to be the teams racing cross-country. This includes some modern-day comedy teams and other stars across all demographics, including who would play Burt Reynolds’ son in the film – a knockout sure-fire pick that should get Joel hired by the film any day now. Corey Hall has some good ideas too, including the hilarious suggestion of a team driving a dumptruck. You gotta listen to find out who! The guys are joined in all this merriment by frequent guest, John Tenney who shares his behind-the-scenes stories from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on which he worked as an extra. You’ll also get a spoiler-filled review of the film from all three hosts, but don’t worry, it’s at the end of the show. Also, a look back at comedy great Garry Shandling, the “Cousin Oliver Syndrome” on TV shows explained, and find out which nostalgia act has Tenney jonesing for a summer concert. Plus, old funny fat man Jon Lovitz gets a hot young girlfriend so there’s hope for all of us – unless it’s a joke, and it looks like it is.

Joel Radio #168: I Spit on Your Grave

It’s always sad when a fellow comedian dies – unless that comedian was such a dick to you that you’re just happy he can’t treat anyone else that way. That’s Joel’s situation, as the one headliner who was a complete jerk to him in the early days has passed away. Joel has nothing nice to say about the guy, but he insists to Corey it’s the only guy he feels that way about (or maybe one more). Hear Joel’s decade-plus old story, his reasoning for holding a grudge all these years, and why Corey and Joel worry they might be felt of the same way when they die. In happier death news, if that’s possible, Beatles producer George Martin passed away and Joel has an audio retrospective of his work including lots of famous non-Beatles stuff. A lovely tribute to a wonderful guy. Also, the HBO series Togetherness comes to Detroit and the guys tell you what they got right and wrong in the episode. Plus, Joel gets interviewed about the show, Cannonball Run II was glorious mess, and Girls loses a girl (fan).

After doing a bang up job recapping the best movies of 2015 last show, Joel and Corey Hall have their review of Hollywood’s official movie show – The Academy Awards 2016. Unfortunately, the show was a joyless mess of preachy speeches and liberal guilt. While the guys love Chris Rock, his one-note “it’s all white people!” shtick got old quick and ultimately didn’t have its desired effect. The were also speeches about global warming, gay rights, date rape and a Kevin Hart speech that was basically Chris Rock without the jokes. Even though they largely got the winners right, the show had the tone of a funeral and not a celebration – a giant waste of time for both the participants and the viewers. In happier news, Joel has a serendipitous run in with the E Street Band in Cleveland, much to Corey’s dismay. Hear how Joel’s love of The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen collided in front of Ringo’s drum kit. Also, there’s a glut of new TV shows both on cable and streaming. Hear the guys’ reviews of 11.22.63 on Hulu, Love on Netflix, Vinyl on HBO, and the very best of all: American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson on FX. Plus, the return of old favorites HBO’s Girls and Togetherness and how the latter show has an important lesson we should learn about relationships, according to Joel. All this and a special message to superfan Cam from Yellowknife – get well, buddy.

It’s Joel Radio’s annual recap of the best and worst movies of 2015, as Corey Hall sits down to chat with Joel who furiously watched nearly a movie a day to bring you his list. It was a down year for movies, but each guy gives you his list of 15 faves plus others they liked including tons of good documentaries, with Joel reviewing every movie nominated for an Academy Award in the major categories. There’s the worst movies, too, like the mess that was The Hateful Eight, the “Oscar bait” movie that is actually cringe-worthy camp, and Johnny Depp getting picked in the worst by both guys – for two different movies! The guys also do their Oscar predictions and tell you why Sylvester Stallone won’t win. If you’re looking for something good to watch, let this show be your guide, and even though it’s long it’s still shorter than The Hateful Eight! Remember to take an intermission!

Joel Radio #165: The Trial of Amy Schumer

The topic of joke thievery has been covered extensively on this show. Joel even made peace with Carlos Mencia back on show #159. So when Amy Schumer, comedy’s newest superstar, was accused of joke thieving this week Joel decided to put together a blue ribbon panel to investigate. Due to unforeseen circumstances, that panel ended up being only Joel and fellow comic Corey Hall. But it turned out OK, as both Joel and Corey have had jokes stolen from them, and genuinely hate when it happens. But is there more to it? Is this just an Amy Schumer backlash? Who are the guys coming up with the accusations? Hear the jokes in question and the guys’ verdict on the whole thing on this show. The results might surprise you. Also, Glenn Frey died this past week, and after the giant Bowie tribute last show, some words deserve to be said – well not by Corey. Hear the debate about if The Eagles were actually any good, Joel’s personal playlist of stuff he likes that’s worse than The Eagles, and Bruce Springteen’s lovely tribute to Glenn which Joel was lucky enough to see in person. Plus, Making a Murderer is just another paranoid conspiracy, local TV has Joel making friends and freezing his ass off at the zoo, and a local comic gets his big break on national TV – even though you heard him here first.

Nothing is more agonizing for a comedian than doing new material. Except for maybe doing new material with 50 other comics in the room, and for only two minutes. That was the dilemma that Joel faced recently, as he was invited to perform at “50 First Jokes” last week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Hear why Joel didn’t want to do the show, how Joel tried to involve Corey Hall in the proceedings, and how he was triumphant anyway when Corey let him down. Joel and Corey Hall select the worst people of the year from idiot politicians to greedy pharmaceutical executives to race-baiters to bullies. The lists were hard to make this year, too. Which Republican Presidential candidate to choose? Which obnoxious sports star? From singers, to movie directors to late-night talk show hosts, the guys have it covered this year. There was a lot of assholery to go around in 2015, so listen to this show, or you might be the asshole of the year for 2016.
