Joel Radio #222: The Green Room Story
Jun 26th
This podcast is known for going off on tangents and taking forever to get to the point, but when comedian Tom McCarthy sat in with Joel and Corey for this week’s show, he had no idea what he was in for. Tom has been a staple of the Detroit comedy scene for fifteen years or so and arrives to promote a TV pilot he’s shooting soon. It involves a lot of local comics and Joel gives his not-so-serious impressions of the talent involved (including many of his former students) — and Corey Hall. Eventually, the guys shut up long enough to let Tom tell the “green room” story which begins a tangent about how open mike shows should run, the skills needed to emcee and Joel thinks most show producers get it wrong. Tom’s a good guy, a funny comic and a great guest on this show. Also, another pro wrestling superstar dies and at least Joel had the honor of sharing the dressing room and being nearly injured by the legendary brute. Plus, reviews of Incredibles 2, Tag, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Want to find a better actor than Hannibal Buress? Simply Google any human being who has ever lived or just look in the mirror.

Tom McCarthy is really good at comedy and Joel is quite middling at Photoshop
Joel Radio #194: To Mother
May 16th
Corey Hall is back discussing what happened to Amy Schumer’s career, celebrating recent TV cancellations, and eating more stunt-flavored Oreo cookies. Find out a few good things to stream – and one awful thing – as Joel checks out I Love Dick on Amazon, Tower on Netflix and Handsome: a Netflix Murder Mystery. I Love Dick is more than a clever title, it’s an art-house movie as a TV show and features some great acting and some top shelf nudity, too. The guys also discuss the rise of food trucks, including Joel’s multi-million dollar idea, and learn why Trader Joe’s beats Aldi even thought they they are essentially the same company. Plus, Joel checks out two big indie wrestling shows with the stars of New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, and has a funny exchange with superstar Kenny Omega that inspires this week’s episode title. Corey went and had a good time, too, including being spit on by a wrestler and having his view blocked by a 300 lb, giant photographer. It’s a long, funny episode suitable for framing. Enjoy.

There’s either a funny story to these photos or pro wrestlers just don’t like Joel
Joel Radio #183: Return of the Beast
Nov 29th
After nine years away, Joel welcomes back Mac Kelly, aka TV horror host Wolfman Mac, to the show. Mac was just beginning his climb to national fame when he last appeared and now he’s looking for his next move. Hear about how his show evolved to get national clearances, the financial challenges of doing a show yourself, and the risks and rewards of following your passion. Joel has some new ideas for Wolfman Mac going forward, details his own challenges with this podcast, and tries to find out what happened to Mac’s other trade – commercial radio. It’s a fun, frank discussion about chasing your dreams and the reality that inevitably catches up with them. Also, a big TV and movie round-up sees the Top Gear guys return on The Grand Tour, Joel gets Oscar-baited at Nocturnal Animals, Search Party isn’t a good as Joel wants it to be, and Green Room is the most terrifying, must-see movie of the year. Plus, the new Oasis documentary takes Joel back to England in the summer of 1994. It’s a good watch, but what happened to the drummer? Does anyone know where the drummer is? It’s a baffling change to what was an almost authoritative, compelling film.

Joel Radio #174: Made In America
Jun 22nd
This show is a bit of a mess, but you might win free concert tickets! Joel Radio has officially become morning radio now, but Joel was gifted free concert tickets via a Ticketmaster class action lawsuit and none of the free shows are anywhere near his home. Listen to this ninety minutes of ridiculousness and let Joel know if you want tickets to any of the shows listed here. Also, America’s Got Talent has gifted us with another kid comedian. It’s not as bad as last time, but it’s still not good. Plus, O.J. Made in America is a must-watch, the Chewbacca Mom’s fifteen minutes of fame is running out, gravity kills a Star Trek cast member and mother nature ruins Joel’s sit-down TV interview – but find out how you can be part of the next one.

If 13-year-old comedians wearing fake glasses are the future of show business, we’ll happily live in the past
Joel Radio #172: Keep The Mask On
May 26th
After the fight on show #171, Corey Hall returns to discuss a radically changing media landscape including the world’s greatest comedian – Chewbacca mask wearing mom, Candace Payne. That she joined late night host James Corden for a bit, really irked Corey though, as the chubby comic was the first media member to get his hands on the oh-so-hot viral video star. The guys discuss the ways the media will exploit Candace – from Ellen DeGeneres writing her a check, to a future Disney parade, hear the predictions of the wacky ways the vampires in Hollywood will use Candace’s stupid-but-admittedly-funny video for their own gains. Also, lots of changes on both local Detroit and national daytime TV, hear about all the moves and how Joel and Corey can become TV superstars. Plus, Joel predicts Morley Safer’s death, Jonah Hill has a hot sister, Midnight Special movie review, and the surprising results of F, Marry, Kill with Oprah, Ellen and Whoopi.

Joel Radio #165: The Trial of Amy Schumer
Jan 29th
The topic of joke thievery has been covered extensively on this show. Joel even made peace with Carlos Mencia back on show #159. So when Amy Schumer, comedy’s newest superstar, was accused of joke thieving this week Joel decided to put together a blue ribbon panel to investigate. Due to unforeseen circumstances, that panel ended up being only Joel and fellow comic Corey Hall. But it turned out OK, as both Joel and Corey have had jokes stolen from them, and genuinely hate when it happens. But is there more to it? Is this just an Amy Schumer backlash? Who are the guys coming up with the accusations? Hear the jokes in question and the guys’ verdict on the whole thing on this show. The results might surprise you. Also, Glenn Frey died this past week, and after the giant Bowie tribute last show, some words deserve to be said – well not by Corey. Hear the debate about if The Eagles were actually any good, Joel’s personal playlist of stuff he likes that’s worse than The Eagles, and Bruce Springteen’s lovely tribute to Glenn which Joel was lucky enough to see in person. Plus, Making a Murderer is just another paranoid conspiracy, local TV has Joel making friends and freezing his ass off at the zoo, and a local comic gets his big break on national TV – even though you heard him here first.

Joel Radio #150: The New Comedy Boom or Bust
Apr 21st
Is comedy having a new boom? According to a recent article, comedy’s future will be performed in the back of a comic book store, to other comedians, and without punch lines – hooray! Actually, Joel is pretty troubled by the recent alt-comedy scene, feeling that so much of it’s charming qualities will fail to transfer to a bigger stage and that audiences will ultimately expect a standard of professionalism once the “boom” translates into people paying top-dollar for their entertainment. Corey seems more optimistic about this new future as podcasts (!) are seen as the new, best way of comedians promoting themselves. Either way, this show has some rock-solid advice for aspiring comedy superstars and a look into the future of comedy and why it may end up looking more like comedy’s past than most people realize. Also, the internet goes crazy for movie trailers as the guys look at the upcoming offerings from Star Wars, The Terminator, Jurassic World, and Batman vs Superman. Plus, Joel goes to Florida and has the scars to prove it, Corey is bored by Sinatra, a new voice says Jimmy Fallon sucks, and does Yahoo! have TV’s best new comedy show?

Joel Radio #144: The State of TV 2015
Jan 16th
It’s the Joel Radio annual look at all things television with Joel Fragomeni and Corey Hall. Rather than a “Best” and “Worst” list the guys decide to do an all-encompassing look at what everyone’s watching right now and in the past year. This includes the new season of Girls on HBO, the new Duplass brothers series Togetherness, Mad Men, Fargo on FX, a reboot of Mythbusters, and so much more. Joel deep-dives into the Golden Globe winning The Affair and the Amazon-only Transparent. One of these is a real bore and one might be the best thing ever – listen and find out which one! Also, Corey presents his list of “Hits and Shits” including some of the worst that daytime TV has to offer. Plus, a farewell to Parks and Recreation, a battle of the best sketch shows with Inside Amy Schumer, Kroll Show and Friends of the People, and why Black Mirror is a must-watch even though it’s old. If you’re looking for shows to watch, stream or download this is the show for you; and if you’re Gaby Hoffmann, we’re sorry. They just can’t help themselves.

Joel Radio #129: The Donkey Story
Jun 12th
Joel Radio welcomes John Tenney to the panel for the first time in a while. John was present at the recent live show disaster and reminisces with Corey and Joel about how bad the show was, the etiquette of heckling, and how the venue really failed the show. From there it’s a grab bag of stuff including, Joel’s story of his Italiain heritage (which includes a donkey), John doesn’t like the look of digital TV, Corey hates 3D, and a new Cheetos flavor gets rave reviews. Plus, Joel does a big show and gets booed for a great joke, a rundown of the E3 video game conference, and the economics of comedy – what it takes to hire a headliner and why John is looking to do so.

Joel Radio #123: Better Than Charades
Feb 21st
It’s the dawning of a new era in late night TV as Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show. The critical mass has been largely positive on the shows first few episodes, but can Jimmy Fallon win over card-carrying Leno-haters Joel and Corey? Joel’s thinking no, as the kiss-ass interviews and lame party games are sure to deflate any discerning viewers interest, and Jimmy’s lack of comedic teeth will soon make the show as dull as any number of daytime TV’s talkers. Corey sees some light on the horizon, but is more happy about Leno’s ouster than anything else. Hear their hard hitting criticism, including Joel’s twitter play-by-play that was so scorching the mainstream media picked up on it. Also, Emma Stone may or may not be nude on the internet and the guys pour over paparazzi bikini pics to do some comparisons – even more expert analysis! Plus, podcasting’s technical details explained by Joel, if you hate coffee you’re a commie (according to Corey), and looking at people’s ex-girlfriends is a total blast and how you can do it yourself.

This games of charades was as funny as it looks. Thanks, Jimmy.
