Hear how good Corey is as picking the winners sight unseen (he’s pretty good), and find out what genre of movies EW bafflingly calls the “new Western”. Also, the guys go hands-on with PlayStation 4 and hear Joel’s tale of internet villainy as he profits from the over-demand of the new console. Plus, a comedy club owner does the worst thing ever to Joel, Johnny Carson’s new book reviewed and much more that’s sure to give you a fever – just like Corey.

Joel Radio #116: Mexican Cokes, American Jokes

Controvery and conspiracy rule the day on this episode of Joel Radio. Exhibit A: Mexican Coke tastes better and is better for you than American Coke, and now that they’re removing the cane sugar from Mexicoke it won’t taste as good. Was it even any different? Joel and Corey do a double bind taste test to prove if they can even tell. And it’s an interesting result, too! One tastes better, but it may not be for the reasons you think. Also, morons on Facebook claim that 9-11 was an inside job and that the LAX shooting was a set-up. Their proof, an unknown web news site posting YouTube videos of “crisis actors” spinning the story for the government’s gains. And, they’re the same guy! Except they’re not, says Joel and Corey who are blessed with the amazing ability to tell human beings apart. The guys also answer an almost-as-important question, does Corey have dreamy eyes? If not than him, than who who does and how gay can a conversation sound between two straight men? Listen and find out. Plus, Toronto’s mayor smokes crack, the new Johnny Carson book is awesome, and all these years later the guys would still bang Monica Lewinsky.

It’s that time of year for scary things. And this podcast is plenty scary. Paranormal investigator John E.L Tenney, Joins Joel and Corey and speaks on things we don’t know, like if Bigfoot exists, the unseen particles that bind the universe together, and why Jay Leno appeared on Good Times. The guys also discuss the state of stand-up comedy and why new comics try risky bits that couldn’t possibly work. Joel thinks that there’s an attempt to achieve “brilliance” like Louis C.K. or Patton Oswalt, at the expense of getting laughs. Also the definition of a “comedian” comes into play – is Joel a comedian who hosts a podcast or a podcaster that does stand-up comedy? Is Joel even funny? Listen and find out. Also, what’s wrong with daytime TV, from Katie Couric’s digital blur to Dr. Oz feeling up housewives, the guys look at what’s good (nothing) and bad (everything) on the boob tube and hear Joel’s theory as how the Today Show lost out to Good Morning America. Joel Radio #114: Three Gross Tastes That Taste Gross Together

The three most disgusting things on this show are not Joel, Corey and guest comedian Sal Demilio. It’s either General Mills’ retro repacking of the “Monster” cereals – Frute Brute, Boo Berry and Yummy Mummy, or Shaquille O”Neal’s new Soda Shaq creme sodas. Actually Shaq’s stuff is probably better on its own than the cereal, and we’re not saying that just ’cause Sal’s part of the company. Listen as the guys try all combinations and permutations of sweet sodas and sugary cereals as they discuss how to make it in the minor leagues of comedy, how to bet on the NFL and Corey’s recent culinary tour of New England. Corey claims the “foodie” aspect of his vacation was happenstance, but never let the facts get in the way of a good Facebook post of a plate of clams. Also, a documentary round-up with something for Beatles fans, the late great Levon Helm, an excellent magic doc you can watch for free, and another of an icon past. Plus, which streaming service is the best, breakfast around the world compared and the new SNL cast is the same as every other SNL cast.

Joel Radio #113: Can’t Touch Them

Q: What happens when The Replacements, a critically-acclaimed and influential band reunites for the first show in 22 years and your host and founder travels hours to attend? A: Spend the majority of the show discussing a performance of 90s has-been rapper MC Hammer. That’s life on Joel Radio. As Joel traveled to see his favorite band from the 80s, John Tenney saw Hammer perform at a local free street fair. And while his knowledge of his setlist leaves something to be desired, John seems to have a good time all things considered. Hear Hammer’s more-impressive-than-you-remember back catalog and hear Joel’s memories of meeting the man himself a few year’s back. And why not more Replacements talk? Seems Corey could put up with the discussion of the opening acts (Rocket From the Crypt, Iggy and The Stooges), but when Joel discusses the band’s performance itself and the mecca it was for their fans, Corey protests and says “no one cares” – this despite incredible enthusiasm from the mainstream press, and the fact that it’s Joel’s own fucking show. Corey’s protests evolve in to a huge fight, an on-air “firing” of Corey by Joel, and a huge smile across Tenney’s face. As entertaining as these fights are, the guys get on the same page for the rest of the show, including a discussion of this fall’s new sitcoms, the outrage over Miley and her twerks, John’s continuing battles as an open mike comedian, MC Sampler getting “No Views”, and discussion of this year’s biggest movie hits and flops and the star who might be considered the new queen of the box office. Lord help us.

Joel Radio #112: Cereal for Girls

Men and women are different. It’s a comedy premise as old as time. That doesn’t stop Joel and Corey Hall from discussing how when it comes to breakfast, men are the superior gender with Count Choculas and Sugar Crisps besting Kashi and Puffins any day of the week. Of course, this topic was brought on by a new experimental Oreo flavor, Birthday Cake, which is an apt description because women would only publicly eat a tiny bit of these cookies publicly, before consuming the rest of them in private. Actually they’re pretty bad for either gender and neither of the guys feels like consuming too many. Also, hear how about Joel’s terrifying studio infestation and how he dealt with it, a Gathering of the Juggalos recap that involves some famous comics a lot of weed, and fallen pro wrestling hero who needs your help. Plus, Werner Herzog makes some great documentaries and Joel’s recommendation makes the famous director’s voice appear magically throughout the rest of the show.

Joel Radio #111: Everybody’s Heard Enough

This week’s Joel Radio hits of a variety of topics with guests Corey Hall and John Tenney. And with The Conjuring being the #1 movie in the country, paranormal researcher Tenney is an expert guest. Of course, none of the three guys on the panel thought the film was any good, either as a haunted house thrill ride or a fictionalized historical retelling. Also, Joel defines what a “comedy show” is, why many open mikes don’t meet the definition, and why John is, by definition a monologist and not a comedian. Plus, The “Pixar Theory” is complete bullshit – the Ferris Bueller Theory is much more interesting, Joel steps up to save the new Newlywed Game, and the Morton Downey Jr. documentary is a must-see. But lastly and perhaps most importantly, MC Sampler continues his media tour after show #110, getting savaged in a Detroit-centric blog, and most hilariously guesting on a local political talk show within days of Detroit’s historic bankruptcy. Hear Sampler’s ridiculous shout-outs to Joel and Tenney while the hosts lose their minds trying to get the wack rapper off the show. It’s comedy gold, and even if you didn’t like Sampler before, this clip just might make you a fan.

Joel Radio #110: Detroit Feels The Same

This week MC Sampler returns to promote his new song and video. If you’re still reading this, there’s actually a lot to like on this show as Sampler doesn’t come in until the second hour, and there’s lots of good stuff in the first half with Corey and Joel. Like Joel’s second “big announcement”, a discussion of the idiocy of Paula Deen and her critics, the future of videogames, and most importantly a dissection of Wendy’s new pretzel bun burgers – a treat that will be oft enjoyed by one host and never purchased again by another. Then comes MC Sampler to promote his new song, “Fuck U Detroit”. While Harry (MC Sampler) has been on the show before to promote things, this time he’s got some really talented people helping him, like his video director Ryan, who joins the show to talk about the challenges of working with Harry, his expectations for the video, and his secret deal for Sampler’s retirement should the video fail. Joel and Corey add their own critique, including compliments for the track, ways for Sampler to get more hits for his projects and the possibility of expanding the “Fuck U” concept to other cities and people. MC Sampler may not be your favorite guest, but it’s a fun, fascinating discussion with a comedy one hit wonder who’s looking for his next big break.

Joel Radio #109: This Is The Middle

The summer movie season brings some highly anticipated releases. For Joel, one was This Is The End with Seth Rogen and the Judd Apatow comedy all stars, and for Corey the Superman reboot, Man of Steel was on his shortlist. Well, both guys are disappointed as neither film lived up to their respective hypes, and that’s the focus of this week’s Joel Radio. Joel Thinks This Is The End and has a soft middle (just like him!), while Corey finds the super-human fistfights exhausting – and they’re both too long. A better watch is Showtime’s Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic, an eye opening look the the comedy legend, and Corey recommends Twenty Feet From Stardom, a doc about professional back-up singers who almost made it. Plus, Joel has two big announcements, the first involves his favorite band reuniting, and the second is even less dramatic, at least according to Corey, who reads Joel’s secret message and decides it’s not even worthy of mention, despite Joel’s protests. What the heck was it? Stay tuned! Joel Radio ends on cliffhanger!

Joel Radio #108: A Gold Star Show

Joel Radio is proud to return to one of its most successful and audience-pleasing bits – having a girl on the show. And not just any girl, but the roller derby racing, joke tellin’, roller coaster ridin’, Lauren. While her exploits with the Detroit Derby Girls and adventures in the male-dominated world in comedy are interesting, Lauren brings a unique, “missed it by that much” story about not banging Zach Braff. Seems the former Scrubs star put on all the right moves, according to Joel and Corey anyway, but there would be no Garden State-esque romance for the two. Find out why it didn’t happen and why Lauren isn’t pursuing Ryan Gosling despite an opportunity, hear awful things that get shouted by guys at gas stations, and what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the worst, most offensive pick-up text message ever. Also, hear why Joel doesn’t think Corey should plan a visit to Cedar Point, Corey’s recent disappointment with a musical hero, and somebody thinks The Hangover 3 is the worst movie ever – that person is America. Plus, Joel watches the most tear-inducing movie ever, and the return of Arrested Development gets a mixed review from the panel – one who saw it and kinda liked it, one who wants to see it and one who doesn’t care.
